When you hear about detection dogs, your mind probably jumps to police K9s tracking scents, airport security sniffing out contraband, or medical alert dogs. But in recent years, a new specialty has emerged: the mould detection dog.

On paper, it sounds fascinating. But as someone looking closer at how this actually plays out in the real world, I have a few serious questions. Are these pups truly revolutionising home inspections, or are we barking up the wrong tree? Let’s break it down.

1. The Training, the Precision, and the Airborne Problem

First off, yes, dogs have an incredible sense of smell. I don't doubt that a well-trained dog can detect the distinct musty odours associated with mould. But I’m deeply sceptical about how a dog can be trained to isolate specific types of mould and maintain high accuracy under varying home conditions.

What happens when the mould isn't sitting on a visible surface? A lot of mould is entirely airborne and hidden behind walls. How does a dog react in that scenario? If spores are floating freely through the atmosphere—perhaps due to high humidity or normal outdoor air transfer—will the dog signal that the entire house is heavily infested, even if there’s no localised colony growing on the drywall? A dog reacts to a scent in the air, but an atmosphere temporarily heavy with ambient spores isn't necessarily a structural mould crisis.

2. The Remediation Hurdle: Chemical Confusion

Let’s say you do find mould, and you hire professionals to come in and complete mould remediation. Afterward, you bring in a mould dog to clear the property. But how accurate can that dog be after a heavy-duty cleanup?

Professional remediation often involves antimicrobial sprays, fungicides, and various chemical treatments. Won't these lingering chemical odours disturb or overwhelm a dog's sensitive sense of smell? If the air is still carrying the scent of remediation products, it seems entirely possible that the dog could get false positives (or false negatives) simply because their olfactory system is thrown off by the aftermath of the cleanup.

3. Do We Even Need Them?

At the end of the day, while dogs are amazing animals, we already have professional science-backed methods for dealing with indoor air quality. Certified hygienists and building biologists can use thermal imaging, moisture meters, and air-sampling cassettes to scientifically test areas and quantify spore counts.

With trained human professionals utilising precision equipment to give you hard data, I’m left wondering: is there really a practical need for mould detection dogs, or are they just a flashy gimmick?
